PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME CUTS VOTERS AFTER BILL BELICHICK SNUB

Bill Belichick is not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame yet, but his glaring omission is already set to have a lasting impact on the selection process.

Friday morning, the Pro Football Hall of Fame announced drastic changes to its enshrinement process, which includes cutting its voter pool in half from 50 members to 25. Three non-voting members will take part in the process, forming a 28-person selection committee. The Hall is also ending the previous system of having one selector from each market present a candidacy. All candidates will now be presented by a person who is not on the committee.

“The Hall continually reviews its bylaws to ensure the selection process reflects the highest standards of integrity and the magnitude of election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame,” Hall of Fame CEO Jim Porter said in a statement. “There is no more important task at the Hall of Fame than the election of each new class.”

“The Hall of Fame’s selection process has always been guided by integrity, thoughtful deliberation and a commitment to honoring those most deserving of football’s highest individual honor,” Porter added. “We believe these changes both augment what has worked well while addressing opportunities to further strengthen a tradition that means so much to the game and everyone who loves it.”

For the first time since 2019, the election will be held in person prior to the Super Bowl. Additional changes include eliminating the senior category and combining all eligible players into a single pool, which still requires five years of retirement. Each new Hall of Fame class can include three to seven members from 15 candidates. According to Porter, the changes are being implemented to eliminate any “unintended biases.”

Those biases were on full display earlier this year when Belichick was snubbed. After long being considered a first-ballot Hall of Famer as the undisputed most accomplished head coach in NFL history, Belichick failed to receive the 40 of 50 required votes for induction. Belichick’s omission led many to question the Hall’s credibility, with calls for changes to the selection process.

Those changes are now being made, but Porter says Belichick is not the sole reason, and that the adjustments are coming after a review of the process that began 2.5 years ago.
