It didn’t take long for Edwin Diaz to upset New York Mets fans even more this offseason after signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Dodgers closer was very candid in his official press conference on Friday about the free agency process, as well as what led him to choose the Dodgers. His answer was much different just 24 hours after he made his first official appearance.
“We have a team that’s going to win,” Diaz told SportsTalkPR on Instagram. “At this point in my career, I’m looking for a team that has the opportunity to win. The decision was the Mets or the Dodgers, and I chose the Dodgers because again, I think they’re going to win.”
This is an example of Diaz saying the quiet part out loud, but that won’t help Mets fans feel any better about his comments. The Mets only have themselves to blame for not giving the star closer enough assurance to stick around and believe they could also compete for a World Series.
Of course, Diaz’s comments come after his former teammate, Pete Alonso, also left the organization for the Baltimore Orioles. While David Stearns believes his retool is necessary to help maintain competitiveness for multiple years, the early stages of his plan have Mets fans and former players questioning the process.
Diaz’s message could have an impact on remaining free agents and their desire to play in Queens. Outsiders may question just how much the Mets are interested in winning this season after hearing Diaz’s comments. This could now be one of the biggest storylines to follow as the offseason progresses.
