The Philadelphia Phillies could be set for big changes this offseason.
Manager Rob Thomson is set to stick around for next season despite the team’s dreadful performances against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Now, the roster is expected to undergo a major shakeup. Former Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. believes the team could offload one of their big contracts.
“You may see one of the big contracts moved,” Amaro said on 94.1 WIP Monday morning. “ … I’m just telling you the big contracts, that’s all I’ll say.”
There are five major contracts that the team has on their books for next season and beyond, according to Spotrac: Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, Aaron Nola, Zack Wheeler and Nick Castellanos. The Phillies aren’t going to move on from Harper or Wheeler, and Castellanos is only under contract for next season before becoming a free agent.
This means two options are left as to which player may be leaving the Phillies between Turner and Nola. However, both players have a full no-trade clause in their contracts. This means the player would have to agree to waive it based upon whether they want to go to the other team.
While Amaro Jr. describes it as a “hunch,” the idea makes sense. The Phillies can’t continue to churn out almost the same roster year after year and expect different results. Dave Dombrowski will have his work cut out for him as the organization tries to turn things around in Philadelphia.
