The Major League Baseball offseason has barely begun for most teams, but the Pittsburgh Pirates are already doing some shopping.
Pittsburgh’s outfield has ranked among the worst in MLB for years in terms of offensive production. The team has evidently reached a point where every addition, big or small, is worth a shot.
On Monday, the Pirates added a new outfielder for the upcoming season because the Chicago White Sox gave them an opportunity they liked.
The Pirates claimed 27-year-old outfielder Will Robertson off waivers from the White Sox, according to the league’s official transactions log. He’s been added to the team’s 40-man roster, and he has two minor-league options remaining, should he not make the team’s opening day roster.
Pittsburgh also designated outfielder Ryan Kreidler for assignment to make room for the addition of Robertson. Kreidler batted .105 in 17 games for the Detroit Tigers earlier this season.
Robertson made his major league debut with the Blue Jays, the team that drafted him in 2019, earlier this season. But he only spent three games on the roster before he found himself designated for assignment. He went on to play 24 more games for Chicago at the big league level.
As previously mentioned, Robertson has options remaining. But the White Sox, who outrighted four other players off the 40-man roster on Monday, appear to be clearing space on the 40-man roster to make room for prospects who would otherwise be subject to the Rule 5 Draft.
Robertson slashed .129/.179/.143 in his major league action, so he’s certainly got plenty to prove in terms of becoming an impact player in Pittsburgh. But his Triple-A stats were sparkling this year: a .958 OPS and 20 home runs in only 89 games.
Pirates fans have seen their team try every bargain-bin method to improve the roster in the past, and the success hasn’t been there. That means the fan base probably won’t have the most open mind for Robertson to win them over, but bigger surprises have certainly happened before.
