BREAKING: NORTHWESTERN QB BRENDAN SULLIVAN ENTERS THE TRANSFER PORTAL

The most important position on the Northwestern roster remains in flux.

Northwestern quarterback Brendan Sullivan announced he has entered the transfer portal via social media on Tuesday morning.

The junior gunslinger appeared in 12 games over the past two seasons for the Wildcats, most notably filling in for an injured Ben Bryant in the middle portion of the ‘Cats’ 2023 season.

After a 2022 campaign where Sullivan played in five games, passing for 589 yards, four touchdowns (and another one on the ground) and three interceptions, the Michigan native bested those numbers this past season. “Sully” threw for 714 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions, adding another 160 yards and two scores on the ground. Sullivan led the ‘Cats to a crucial 33-27 win over Maryland as he accumulated 321 total yards and two touchdowns.

With Ben Bryant’s eligibility expiring, Sullivan seemed poised to slot in as the top quarterback on the roster for the 2024 season. His sudden departure may indicate a shake-up is coming to the quarterback room — whether it be internal or in the transfer portal.

With Sullivan in the portal, Jack Lausch, Ryan Hilinski and Aidan Gray are the remaining signal callers on the current roster. Hilinski started games for the Wildcats in the 2022 season, most notably leading the ‘Cats to a Week Zero win over Nebraska in Ireland. However, his play tailed off and he seldom saw the field in 2023, attempting just four passes. Lausch has almost exclusively been used as a change-of-pace rushing threat in his career thus far, including a touchdown against UTEP this past season. Despite the sophomore attempting just 14 passes in his career, he was seen splitting first-team reps with Sullivan in last week’s open spring practice. Gray has yet to appear in a game for the ‘Cats.

In the post-spring wave of transfer portal news, Northwestern is expected to be active in recruiting players for the 2024 roster, and those additions could certainly include a quarterback. Ben Bryant announced his decision to transfer to Evanston on May 3 last year and helped lead the ‘Cats to an 8-5 season and a Las Vegas Bowl victory. The ‘Cats may look to make a similar impact in the portal this year.
