COWBOYS GIVE NO. 13 TO OVERSHOWN; NO SIGNING OF GALLUP?

FRISCO - The gossiped-about idea of the Dallas Cowboys bringing back the recently released Michael Gallup isn't a bad one, depending on the numbers one studies.

But if you study the number "13,'' you see how little the free agent receiver presently fits into Dallas plans.

This weekend, in the wake of the NFL Draft, the Cowboys started to truly solidify the roster. That included the assignment of jerseys for the 2024 season.

Now, these thinks can change. "Fungible'' would be the word team owner Jerry Jones might use.

But while Dallas might take a future second look at Gallup, right now, there is a new "No. 13.''

And it belongs to rehabbing linebacker DeMarvion Overshown, who wore 35 last year as a rookie, but who has moved to No. 13.

Overshown is going to make the team. Meaning he's keeping No. 13. Meaning the Cowboys didn't even consider holding it in storage for Gallup, who experienced a breakout year in his second season of 2019, with 66 receptions for 1,107 yards.

But then he tore his ACL in 2021. Even with the injury, Dallas gave him a five-year, $57.5 million contract - a move that did not work out.

The third-round draft pick from 2018 experienced a drastic decline in production, as last season he had career-lows in yards (418) and touchdowns (two) and the second-fewest catches (34).

Gallup's search for a new contract can now continue. And while there could be another number issued if things change ... the number 13 says that contract just got less likely to be with Dallas.
