DEION SANDERS APOLOGIZES AFTER BIG 12 HITS COLORADO WITH HEFTY FINE
The Colorado Buffaloes’ matchup with No. 23 BYU on Saturday is a game that head coach Deion Sanders presumably would like to forget.
Colorado blew a 14-point first-quarter lead, college football fans were calling for quarterback Kaidon Salter to be benched by the second half, and the school ended up getting hit with a pretty hefty fine by the Big 12.
It was reported by ESPN that the conference has fined Colorado $50,000 and publicly reprimanded the university for a derogatory chant directed at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Buffaloes fans during the BYU game.
“Hateful and discriminatory language has no home in the Big 12 Conference,” league commissioner Brett Yormark said in a statement, via ESPN. “While we appreciate Colorado apologizing for the chants that occurred in the stands during Saturday’s game, the Big 12 maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.”
BYU released a statement on Monday night on social media denouncing “all forms of religious discrimination” while stating it appreciated Colorado’s “example in rooting out these inappropriate actions.”

Sanders, who’s been very outspoken about his Christian faith, publicly apologized to BYU during his weekly news conference for the expletive-laden remarks about Mormons that came from the student section, making it known that neither he nor the school condones that kind of behavior.
“That’s not indicative of who we are,” Sanders said. “Our student body, our kids, are phenomenal. So don’t indict us just based on a group of young kids that probably was intoxicated and high simultaneously.
“Maybe I shouldn’t have said that as well, but the truth is going to make you free. But BYU, we love you. We appreciate you and we support you.”

CU chancellor Justin Schwartz and athletic director Rick George also promised to hold those who participated in the chant accountable under the university’s fan code of conduct in a joint statement released on Tuesday, in which they condemned the behavior and called it deeply disappointing.
Colorado (2-3, 0-2 in the Big 12), returns to action this weekend when it travels to TCU to face the Horned Frogs on Saturday night. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
