In Baton Rouge, it’s a party right now for Lane Kiffin and the LSU Tigers. The newly minted coach is already hot on the trail of top prospects and transfer portal candidates, as he searches for a 2026 quarterback to lead the 2019 champions back to the top of the college football world.
At Ole Miss, though, where he left in the middle of the night and took a private plane out of Oxford that morning to join an SEC rival, there is a scene of abandonment and bitterness.
The Rebels are in the College Football Playoff for the first time in school history, and instead of having a chance at a historic national title under their head coach, Kiffin, they have scrambled to rally the team in the wake of his departure.
From Christopher Kamrani and Joe Rexrode of The Athletic, who documented the aftermath of one of the craziest coaching transfers we’ve seen in the sport, Oxford has been left reeling. Although new coach Pete Golding has the team energized and the town excited for their home opening-round game against the Tulane Green Wave, there is a sense of pain across Mississippi over Kiffin’s exit.

From businesses to staff inside the school, the move affected almost everyone living in Oxford. The players’ parents, though, also feel they were given the short stick, with even one anonymous family member telling The Athletic that Kiffin had lost focus and become “checked out” as the LSU rumors grew louder.
The notion that Kiffin tried his hardest to stay on with the Rebels throughout the postseason also seemed to frustrate players and parents, as they saw it as a slap in the face to the school.
“You can’t take a job at an SEC rival and expect to coach in the playoffs,” one parent was quoted in the article. “Give me a break.”
While Kiffin explores the portal and looks to rebuild LSU into a national power, the Rebels will begin their hunt for a national title this weekend. The two will meet on Sept. 19, 2026, in Oxford when Kiffin has to face the music (and families) he left back in Mississippi.
